What are Interventional Procedures?

Interventional procedures are minimally invasive and usually involve treating specific areas of the body through a process that involves imaging guidance. This type of procedure is an alternative to surgery, making for faster patient recovery and less risk.

Using radiologists’ expertise in medical images, ultrasounds, MRIs, and X-rays, we are able to use extremely small instruments to either figure out the underlying cause of chronic pain in patients or start the process of fixing the source of pain. Our doctors are specialized in this type of procedure and are members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Association, Missouri State Medical Association, and Spine Intervention Society.

Two most common interventional procedures that we provide are nerve blocks and injections. Nerve blocks are where a medical professional injects an anesthetic near the nerves that are having issues. For some patients, these blocks are repeated fairly often, but for others they may only need it once or twice while their body recovers from an injury.

Steroid injections are used to reduce pain and inflammation in troublesome areas (for example, many get them in their backs, knees, or hips). These injections are given in concentrated doses and diffuse throughout the body in days following the injection.
