Observed Urine Screenings

All patients at Elite Pain Management undergo witnessed drug screens.

By analyzing the urine we can measure the types and amounts of medications or illicit drugs in the body. This will allow us to know whether the patient is following their prescription plan. There is zero tolerance for patients who fail their drug screens or divert their medication.

In one study, Couto found that results from nearly 1 million patient test samples indicated that three-quarters of patients probably were not taking their medications in keeping with their prescription (Popul Health Manag 2009;12:185-190). Overall, 38% did not have detectable levels of their prescribed medication, while 27% had higher drug levels than would be expected, and 15% had lower-than-expected levels.

At Elite Pain Management, our model utilizes a strict, multidisciplinary approach to treatment including pain contracts that allow only one physician to prescribe the patient’s medication, weaning patients off other medications such as benzodiazepines (Valium and Xanax) which potentiate overdoes. We also take extensive medical histories on all patients to help ensure that the medications are not being diverts.   All these policies and procedures are in place to help ensure that our patients have the opportunity to achieve a better quality of life.
